Ganesh Chaturthi or Sri Varasiddhi Vinayak Vrat is celebrated on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapadmaas occurring on Monday, 7th September, 2024.
Varasiddhi Vinayak Vrat is mainly performed by all the Hindus seeking the benevolence of Ganapati. They pray for the freedom from troubles known as Vighnas (breaks or difficulties) that could haunt their work, profession or business. Puranas mention that, Ganapati is always offered prayers before the beginning of any activity, as this was the boon given by Lord Brahma. He said giving the boon to Lord Ganapati, that “Whoever begins work without offering prayers to Vighneshwar shall suffer from difficulties hither to unbeknownst!”

Ganesh is the favorite son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati
The names Ganesh or Ganapati or Ganadhipati mean that he is the figure head for Ganas, the followers and worshippers of Lord Shiva and Parvati. The beginning of Ganesh is a very curious story. Once, when Lord Shiva was away on a campaign, Parvati wanted to take bath. However as there was no one around, she took some clay (it is said she used Snanachurnam) and made a baby boy and breathed life into him. She asked the boy not to let anyone into the house till she came back from her bath. He agreed and demanded something to eat while guarding. Parvati gave him some modaks (sweet dish).
When Shiva returned from his campaign, all tired and wanted to get into his abode for rest, he was stopped by the boy set up by Parvati. After the negotiations failed between Shiva and the boy, a swift battle ensued and Shiva cut off the boy’s head.
Paravti flew into a fit of rage and sadness seeing the boy’s head cut off, and threatened to destroy everything. Shiva pacified her promising to bring the boy to life.
Ganesha gets the Elephant-Head
He ordered his Ganas to bring the head of the first living body sleeping with head to north. They returned with the head of an elephant. Shiva attached the head of the elephant to the boy and made him come alive. Shiva and other gods decided to give some additional boons to this elephant head boy and made him the figure-head and called him Ganapati.
This is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi. More Leelas by Ganapati can be learnt from Ganesha Puranam.
How did Varasiddhi Vinayak Vrat come into practice?
Varasiddhi Vinayak Vrat finds mention in Skanda Puranam. It explains how Yudhishthir learnt about this Vrat from Shaunakadi Munis when he was in Vanvaas with his brothers and Draupadi. Skanda Puranam also mentions how many others including Lord Krishna benefitted by performing this Vratham.
Why do Ganesh Chauti Vrat Pooja?
Lord Brahma and many other gods and goddesses gave many boons to Ganesha. Brahma said giving the boon to Lord Ganapati, that “Whoever begins work without offering prayers to Vighneshwar shall suffer from difficulties hither to unbeknownst!” Saraswati gave him all the Vidya and made him Vidyadhipati. Vishnu gave him Ashta Siddhis. He was called Pramathadhipa and offered the first worship before any other.
