Mahatobhara Sri Vishweshvara Sri Kshetra in Yellur is about 26km from Udupi famous for its Sri Krishna Mutt and the Ashta Mathas founded by Sri Madhvacharya, the founder of Dwaita philosophy. Sri Vishweshvara temple here, is believed to be more than a thousand years old. The temple has been built in classic Devayatana style.

A legend says that, Lord Shiva in the form of Shivalingam was found by a tribal woman searching for her son. By accident, her machete hit some hard stone, half buried which started bleeding. Horrified, she rushed to inform the king of the region. The bleeding stopped after coconut water was poured on the Shivalingam. After this incident, the Shivalingam was installed formally. The region became popular as Yellur, which is believed to have been uttered by the tribal. To commemorate this incident, coconut water is used to anoint Lord Shiva here and not sold for consumption in the region. Another legend is that, a king named Bhurikeerti who was ruling this region is believed to have done penance to Lord Shiva and obtained a Shivalingam, that was installed in the western coast. Many rock edicts substantiate the history of the temple.

Shatarudrabhisheka and Abhisheka done with coconut water are said to be very auspicious.
