Sanctity of Udupi
At the heart of Udupi lies the revered Sri Krishna Temple, a sacred sanctuary that exudes divine energy and spiritual harmony. Established by the saint Madhvacharya, the temple stands as a testament to devotion and worship, drawing pilgrims from far and wide to seek the blessings of Lord Krishna. The sanctum sanctorum, adorned with intricately carved sculptures and vibrant murals, emanates an aura of tranquility, making it an ideal venue for spiritual weddings imbued with divine grace.
Parashurama Kshetra – Land of Parashuram
During the Avatar (Meaning – incarnation) of Lord Parashuram, the sixth Avatar of Lord Vishnu, the western coast of Bharat khand (India) was threatened by the turbulent seas causing storms, that were engulfing the lands and harming the lives. Parashuram intervened and fought the seas and recovered the land using his Parashu, the battle axe.
Since the land was filled with salt, it was barren. Lord Parashuram then called upon Adi Shesh (Shesh Naag), lord of Snakes with his penance and requested the snakes to neutralize the salt with their venom, making the land became fertile. Since then the coastal areas of Kerala, Konkan, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra came to be known as Parashurama Kshetra or Land of Parashuram. Udupi forms part of this coastal belt. This incident finds mention in Sahyadri Khand of Skanda Puran.
King Ramabhoja and Rajata Peethapura | Udupi
King Ramabhoja who ruled the entire Parashurama Kshetra once killed a snake by mistake while ploughing the land. In repentance, Ramabhoja was directed by Parashuram to build a Rajata Peetha (Silver adorned throne) with the image of a serpent at its four corners in obeisance. Parashuram also ordered that the King distribute gold to the needy, equal to his own weight as Tula Bhara.
Kanakana Kindi | Kanaka’s Window
Kanakana Kindi is a special window of Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi, through which anyone can easily seek Darshan of the Lord. This Kanakana Kindi has a special existence from 16th Century CE. Sri Kanakadaasa was a warrior chieftain, who turned an ascetic and was a disciple of Sri Vyasaraja Teertharu who preached Dwaitha Philosophy. Sage Vadiraja Teertharu is believed to have studied together with Sri Kanakadasaru.
