When should I perform Vedarambh Pooja or Aksharabhyas to my child?

Vedarambh Pooja or Aksharabhyasam is usually performed when the child is of the age to grasp a chalk or writing instrument in the hand. As the kids undergo education in preschools by the time they turn three years old, it has become an accepted practice to perform ‘Vidyarambh’ before they are in pre-school.

Shubha Muhurtam for Aksharabhyasam

Aksharabhyasam or Vedarambha Puja is performed in the Shubha Muhurtam or Mahurat on a date decided according to Vedic Astrological practices. Maasa, Thithi, Nakshatram, Week and other astrological factors like Ashtama Shuddhi, Guru Asta, Shukra Asta, position of Surya Graha are also useful in arriving at the Shubha Muhurtam.

Paushmaas, Maghmaas, Phalgunmaas, Chaitramaas, Vaishakhmaas and Jyeshthamaas are the Uttarayan months considered auspicious. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are the weeks generally preferred to perform Vedarambh Pooja.

This Pooja is also suggested to be performed on the Hindu calendar dates of Chandramana Yugadi, Akshaya Triteeya, Shravana Paurnami, Vijaya Dashamee, Vaikunth Ekadashi, Ratha Saptamee, Basant Panchami or any auspicious day selected on the basis of Muhurtam (Mahurat) based on Janma Patrika.

Which day is suitable for Aksharabhyasam?

The suitable date for Aksharabhyasam varies according to the region.

In Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and parts of Maharashtra, the Sanskar is begun during Navaratri festival. Muhurtam and date is also selected based on Janma Patrika (Horoscope). Aksharabhyasam in Uttarayan is also followed. Days with the Thithi of Dvitya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi, Trayodashi and Purnima are considered highly auspicious.

Aksharabhyasam Based on Auspicious Nakshatram

Days with Ashwini, Punarvasu, Hasta, Chitta, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Revati as the Nakshatram are generally selected as per Astrological practices.

In Bengal, the festival of Basant Panchami dedicated to Goddess Saraswati occurring in the bright fortnight of Maghamaas is used as an occasion of Aksharabhyas. This is known as Haathe Khori or Vidyarambh.
