Significance of Ashta Bhuja Durga
Ashta Bhuja Durga Devi, also known as Maha Durga or simply Durga, holds a significant place in the Hindu spirituality. The term “Ashta Bhuja” translates to “eight arms,” which symbolize her immense power and ability to protect her devotees from all the eight directions. “Durga” in Sanskrit means “invincible”. Du means poverty, sufferings, evil habits and famine. R refers to diseases and Ga implies destroyer of sins, injustice, cruelty and laziness.
The eight armed Durga is also known as Bhavani or Ambika. She took Avatar as daughter of Yashoda in Dwapar Yug, to remind the demon king Kans (Kams), that Lord Krishna has taken birth. Some people consider her as Vaishno Devi, some consider her as Jwala Devi and some consider her as Chintpurni and some consider her as Tulaja Bhavani. Devi Kushmanda is also known as “Ashtabhuja” and she is depicted as having eight arms. The fourth day Durga Puja during Navaratri belongs to Goddess Kushmanda who eliminates ailments and sorrows and bestows longevity, name, strength and health.
Durga Puja
Durga Puja or worship has been an age old practice prescribed in Shakteya Principle. This finds reference in Shiva Maha Puran. Durga is mentioned in the Vedas and also in many Upanishads. Devi Suktam, Ratri Suktam form the part of Rigveda.
Durga took form from the concentrated energies and force of all the Gods. She holds the weapons of all the Gods and Goddesses, which were given to fight the evil forces.
During festivals like Navaratri, which celebrates the triumph of good over evil, special ceremonies and rituals are performed in reverence to Durga Devi.
Rahu kaala Deepam to Durga
Rahu kaala Deepam is lighted in Durga temples during Rahu kalam on Friday, Tuesday and Sunday. Aadi Velli or Ashadha Shukravara can be an ideal time for lighting Deepam. Lemons are used as lamp-holders in this pooja. Durga kavacham, Mahishasuramardini Stotram, Nava Durga Stuti or any shlokas on Durga and Shiva are chanted while observing this pooja.
Rahu Kala pooja using lemons is to be done in temples only.
